Hi Y’all,
It’s been a long road to get back on the path to regular workouts. I have been trying to follow my own advice and take it one step at a time. While I’ve gotten a lot of things accomplished during my recovery period, I am happy to be closer to regular workouts. That all being said, here’s week 20:
Monday (September 11th): Hurricane & Mom’s Birthday
Hurricane Irma took my power towards the end of the day. I walked Zoey a few times in anticipation of the weather. She didn’t appreciate my interruptions to her sleep pattern. More importantly, it was my original race enabler’s birthday. My mom is one the reasons I started running and walking in races. While it wasn’t a perfect birthday, she did get the day off!
Tuesday (September 12th): Irma continues…
I read for most of the day. It is rare that I have a day to read. Since my Kindle was charged, the power was off, FitWit was canceled, and it was raining more than I wanted to brave, I vegged. I love my Kindle Fire and I used it after my power went out.
Wednesday (September 13th): Atlanta United Game
I took my first trip to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium to see my first professional soccer game. Lacey and I went to the game and saw our MSL team score seven goals. They were on fire! So much so, while getting settled and checking in on Facebook, they scored the first goal. Two players from the other team were red-carded before halftime. I even think it was less than a quarter of the way into the game.

I highly recommend catching a game. Atlanta United is a great team. Also, the stadium has affordable and yummy food. I ate for $12.00 including a sweet tea! Unheard of!!! Needless to say, my workout consisted of the walking to and from Marta and some stair climbing.
Thursday (September 14th): FitWit
Cabin Fever workout was insane and fun all at the same time! Felt better than I have in a long time.
Friday (September 15th): FitWit
It was another sweat pouring workout. It two 12 minute sets. I felt it the next day but didn’t regret it at all!
Saturday (September 16th): Training
It was Saturday 5K training. We did a few miles and worked on foam rolling with the participants. It was a nice shake out from Friday’s workout.
Sunday (September 17th): ADMH 5K
As a member of Georgia’s Team Beef, I have an allowance to run races. Due to a generous grant, I had a larger allowance which meant I could run races I would normally not have the budget to do while also supporting great causes. So I didn’t have a budgetary restraint for doing the race, but I almost did go to the race. I almost let my fear of potentially being last and not having my tribe stop me from going. But here’s the thing, I truly believe it doesn’t matter if I’m last. I do sometimes have to remind myself that first or last, I still have fun at races.
So I was left with the idea that I would be alone. Yeah so really it was a fleeting thought since in the running community you are never really alone. I do tend to make race friends pretty easily whether I want them or not…haha. In case you are wondering, I made it like 100 feet into the park before I saw one person I knew. By the time the race started, I saw and hung out with at least 5 people I knew from my tribe. My back cooperated for the most part and I didn’t let temporary fear keep me from the race. Not only that it was a great race, a great course at Brook Run Park, and a great start to the day. (Nope I wasn’t last) Plus the Team Beef jersey is always a hit!
By the time the race started, I saw and hung out with at least 5 people I knew from my tribe. My back cooperated for the most part and I didn’t let temporary fear keep me from the race. I covered 3.1 miles alone surrounded by people and loved every minute of it! With a clear mind and relaxed body, I ear hustled like a champ. (By the way, it is hard to not laugh at craziness heard along the way but the random laugh has gained me some great race day conversation too!)

Remember whether you have found your tribe or you may be the last to cross the finish line that the running community will embrace you. People are generally happy and supportive. Also, sometimes a few miles alone are a great way to clear the mind, make a grocery list, check in on your form or breathing.
I’m telling you to recognize the fear but don’t let it stop you continuing your journey #onestepatatime,
TJ
P.S. My clean car came along with me to the race. I might have the hang of this clean car club thing.
